COACHING SPORT

Being your best  with regard to sport can have different meanings to different people:  winning that international competition, reaching your personal best time in the London Marathon - or finding that the love of a new sport means that you're healthier, happier and brimming with energy.

There are two categories of sporting performance:  participation and high performance.  A participation culture generally applies to grass-roots level sports where the main aim is to get stuck into activity and to develop a love of the game. Life skills have far greater importance than athletic skills and participants build friendships, are part of a team, cope with disappointment and commit to regular discipline of training.  Everyone who turns up to play has the opportunity to achieve their personal best and to head home afterwards feeling energised and buoyant. Focus is on building the routine of happy, healthy activities which contribute to a happy, healthy lifestyle.

High performance culture, on the other hand, is about higher risk for higher reward. The athletic mindset? Compete. Win.

High performance culture is about higher risk for higher reward. Participation at this level means that disappointment and frustration are likely – as is the delight of greater achievement. The high performance culture starts when the team or athlete is serious about winning. Goals of achieving personal best times or representative teams are set and the drivers of mind and body need to be aligned to reach those targets as quickly and effectively as possible.

Performance coaching for sport, as for life, is an efficiency training process. Olympic, professional and elite athletes benefit from mental performance coaching through developing a framework based on pre-and post-performance schedule plans and acquiring tools and strategies to meet their needs. Even the greatest athletes can improve, as Tiger Woods illustrated when he re-built his famous swing, despite being at the top of his game.

Rugby teams use performance coaching for both individual and team performance, culturally and technically. Netball teams use performance coaching for developing leadership skills on and off the court. Surf lifesavers and triathletes use performance coaching to improve their training output as well as streamlining transitional moves. Olympic cyclists and professional motorsports drivers use performance coaching for management of pre-competition stress.

Athletes also use performance coaching to better return from injury or to change from one level of competition to another. Basically, when you start to consolidate your physical skills, it’s time to maximise your mental ones through mental performance coaching.

I have worked with many sports, both team and individual, including rugby, polo, triathlon, netball, cricket, golf, cycling, hockey, marathon running, surf lifesaving, speed skating and rowing.  If you are serious about achieving within your sport, then I would be delighted to show you how performance coaching helps you reach your goals faster and more efficiently than trying to do so without mental training.  As top athletes will tell you, once you have the technical skills and the physical fitness, it is your mind which will win you the prize.

Testimonials

Sports testimonial

"Through the years I have worked with Miranda, she has helped me develop personally and professionally both on and off the field. Miranda has helped the team and I deal with many significant issues throughout her time at Queensland Rugby including change of head coaches, player suicides, team disharmony, leadership issues and team losses. Each player knew you could call on her at any time and she would drop anything to provide immediate assistance." Professional rugby player.

I wrote Fitter, Faster, Stronger, Smarter (FFSS) for my clients and radio listeners to have reference material on the coaching process that I use. Whether you're a sporting or corporate athlete, or wanting to coach the best in others, you'll find it an easy-to-read, systematic guide to performance enhancement. I am also working on my second book.
